Educational IT is about ensuring that your students and tutors have reliable access to the myriad of tools required to support your curriculum. IT departments are usually driven by their ability to provide responsive IT support due to the timescales that classes have to run in. This can tend to lead to a reactive approach to IT and if not managed carefully can have a detrimental effect on the quality of services provided. IT projects in education tend to be implemented during term breaks; this brings the challenge of immovable deadlines. Without good planning and pragmatic approach to projects these can invariably end up rushed, poorly implemented or simply not fit for purpose. There are of course positives to working in the educational IT market, due to the discounts available on software for example, systems can and are, regularly implemented that would be out of the reach of comparatively sized public or private businesses. There's also the added bonus of working with large numbers of users in a fast moving environment which constantly tests your ability to react professionally whilst under time pressures. Business and IT has successfully rolled out education projects including technical architecture designs & implementations, security reviews and implementations, IT Team transformations to ensure efficient and timely support, Service Desk evaluations and process reengineering to name but a few.
